Bible paper, explained: printing 2,000 pages you can hold in one hand.
A complete Bible runs somewhere between 1,500 and 2,500 pages, and readers expect to carry it to church in one hand. The paper that makes this possible is the thinnest stock in commercial bookmaking — and the least forgiving thing we run on our presses.
Ordinary book paper runs 70 to 100gsm — grams per square meter. Bible paper runs 28 to 40gsm as standard, and ultra-thin grades go down to 22gsm, which is closer to the weight of a tissue than to anything most designers have specified. At those weights, a block of two thousand pages still closes into a book you can hold in one hand. That is the entire point of the material, and everything else about it follows from that number.
The spec that matters is not weight
Here is the mistake we see most often in enquiries: treating gsm as the whole specification. Two papers of identical weight can behave completely differently on the page, because the property a reader actually experiences is opacity — how much the printing on the reverse side ghosts through the sheet. Printers call that ghosting show-through, and on a page carrying dense scripture in two columns, it is the difference between a readable edition and a tiring one.
Proper Bible paper is engineered for high opacity at low weight, usually with mineral fillers loaded into the sheet. When we quote a thin-paper project, the opacity rating is the first thing we look at, before weight, before price. A cheap 30gsm sheet with poor opacity will read worse than a good 34gsm sheet, and weigh almost nothing less.
Choosing a weight, roughly

Study editions sit at the top of that table for a reason: cross-references, commentary and colored maps put far more ink on the page, and a slightly heavier sheet keeps all of it legible. A compact gift edition can afford to go the other way. Most projects that come to us without a firm preference end up in the 28–40gsm band.
Why thin paper must be sewn
A page of 30gsm paper is close to a hairline at the spine edge. Ask an adhesive to grip two thousand of those edges and hold them through years of daily opening, and it will eventually let go — there is simply not enough paper for the glue to hold. This is why serious thin-paper editions are Smyth sewn: thread passes through the fold of each section, so the hold is mechanical, not chemical. We covered that distinction fully in Smyth sewn or perfect bound; for Bible paper it is not really a choice at all. It also gives the flat, easy opening a reference book needs.
What happens on press
Thin stock forgives nothing. Ink that would sit politely on an 80gsm sheet can strike through a 28gsm one, so ink densities are run tighter. The sheet itself has almost no body, so tension through the press has to be controlled constantly or the paper wrinkles and misregisters. And red-letter editions add a second color that must register precisely with the black text on a sheet that moves — a two-color register job on stock that behaves like fabric. Our Heidelberg presses have run these papers for years, and it is still the work our press operators watch most closely. It is also why we build proofing time of 3–5 days into every thin-paper schedule before the main run.
How to judge a sample
When a sample edition arrives, do three things. Hold a single page up against a window and look at how much of the reverse side reads through — that is the opacity, unedited. Then lay the open book flat on a table and see whether it stays open without being held. Finally, look into the gutter for thread. A sample that passes all three will survive its owner's daily use; a sample that fails the first one will never be pleasant to read, whatever the binding.
