PUR or EVA: the glue decision nobody tells self-publishers about.

Almost every paperback on earth is held together by one of two hot-melt adhesives. Most quotes never mention which one you are getting, and the difference only shows up after the books have shipped.

When a printer says "perfect bound", the sentence is unfinished. Perfect bound with what? There are two answers, and they behave differently enough that we treat them as separate products in our bindery. Neither is a trick or a shortcut; they are simply different chemistries, and each is the wrong choice for the other's books.

Two glues, two chemistries

EVA — ethylene-vinyl acetate — is the classic hot-melt. It is applied molten, sets as it cools, and has been the industry default for decades because it is fast and economical. Its weakness is that the set glue stays somewhat brittle: it can crack in cold, soften in heat, and it grips coated papers poorly.

PUR — polyurethane reactive — is applied hot too, but it does not merely cool; it cures, reacting with moisture in the paper and the air to form a bond that is commonly cited as around 50 percent stronger than EVA, and that stays flexible across temperature swings. Once cured, it shrugs off conditions that make EVA fail.

The cheapest glue is the one that matches the book. The most expensive is the one that fails after delivery.

When PUR earns its cost

PUR costs more per book, and there are projects where that money is simply insurance you should buy. In our experience it earns its keep on:

  • Coated or glossy paper — EVA struggles to key into the coating; PUR does not care.
  • Heavy ink coverage — full-bleed art pages leave less bare fiber at the spine for glue to grip.
  • Thick books — more pages means more leverage working against the glue line every time the book opens.
  • Books shipped through hot containers — a sea crossing in summer is a heat test EVA can fail before a single reader opens the box.
  • Books that need to open generously — PUR's flexible film allows a nearly lay-flat spread without cracking.

When EVA is still the right call

None of this makes EVA obsolete. A novel on uncoated text paper, opened gently and read once, does not stress its spine enough to justify PUR. Short-life print — programs, workbook supplements, seasonal catalogs — will be recycled long before the glue matters. Paying for PUR there is paying twice for the same strength.

The schedule nobody mentions

One practical difference hides in the calendar. EVA sets in seconds; PUR needs cure time — the bound books must rest before they are trimmed hard, packed, and boxed, because the reaction is still finishing. In our plant that is simply built into the flow, and it is one reason binding method belongs in the first conversation, not the last: within our usual 15–25 day production window, the glue choice is part of how the final days are planned.

How to test a sample

You do not need a lab. Take the sample paperback and flex it fully open at the middle — a good PUR spine flexes; a poor EVA spine creaks or shows a white crease line. Grip a single page near the spine and tug firmly; it should tear before it pulls free of the glue. And if you want the honest version of the container test, leave the book on a car dashboard on a hot afternoon and try the same tug afterwards. We send samples of both bindings on request, and when a project sits near the line, we quote both so the difference is a number rather than an argument.
